Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology Department is specialized in treating diseases affecting parts of the digestive system, such as the liver, stomach, intestines and biliary tract.
The medical team consists of specialists with rich experience and high-level skills in the field of: Liver diseases, Pancreas-biliary tract diseases and treatment endoscopy, and Stomach and large intestines related diseases. The endoscopy team performs various types of endoscopy that require a high level of technique, including: Nasoendoscopy, Capsule endoscopy, Endoscopic treatment of submucosal tumor in the stomach and Small intestine endoscopy using ropeway.
In addition, the medical team publishes many research papers each year in domestic and international journals, and is treating digestive illness more effectively through the Liver center, Stomach cancer center, Colon cancer center, Submucosal tumor clinic, and Gastrointestinal obstruction clinic.

Cardiology

The Cardiology Department is specialized in high blood pressure, angina, cardiac infarction, arrhythmia, heart valve disease, congenital heart diseases and cardiovascular disorders.
Ischaemic heart diseases such as angina and cardiac infarction are treated without incision in the Cardiology Department through coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty and stents. Balloon valvuloplasty (mitral stenosis), electrophysiological examination, radiofrequency catheter ablation, pacemaker, and electroporation (arrhythmia), all of which require a high level of technique, are frequently performed as well.

The role of pulmonology has become more important recently due to an increase in respiratory diseases caused by smoking, air pollution, and various epidemic pathogens.
Diseases treated within the Pulmonology Department include lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, pulmonary tuberculosis, acute lung injury, acute respiratory failure, and pneumonia, which are contagious, recurrent, and difficult to fully recover from.

Endocrinology & Metabolism

The Endocrinology & Metabolism Department specializes in treating tumors in the endocrine organs, and abnormalities in hormones and metabolism.
The Endocrinology & Metabolism Department is specialized in treating diabetes, thyroid disease, pituitary gland & adrenal disease, reproductive-endocrine disease, metabolic disease, and various tumors that can occur in the endocrine organs, such as thyroid tumor, pituitary & adrenal tumor.
The endocrinologic examination room, which specializes only in endocrine-related diseases, performs bone density examination, thyroid ultrasonic examination, and various examinations related to metabolic diseases. It also has professional nurses and nutritionists, who provide diabetic education and nutritional consultation to outpatients.

The Nephrology

The Nephrology Department specializes in various diseases related to the kidneys.
Nephrology can be subdivided into 5 fields: water & electrolyte disorder, glomerulonephritis, urinary infection & stone, chronic renal failure & dialysis therapy, and kidney transplant
The hemodialysis room strives to provide quality hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis to inpatients, emergency patients, and outpatients under the supervision of professional nurses in a relaxing environment. Also, the patient can receive treatment and dialysis after revascularization in vascular surgery during the day in the event of an emergency due to arteriovenous fistula obstruction.

The Hematology-Oncology

The Hematology and Oncology Department specializes in solid cancers, blood cancers, and various benign hematologic diseases.
The Hematology & Oncology Department is able to perform outpatient treatment under the supervision of professional nurses because it possesses 21 outpatient sickbeds for anticancer treatment. As well, patients can safely and conveniently receive the latest anticancer treatments, allogeneic marrow transplantation, and autogenous stem cell transplantation treatments under the supervision of nurses specialized in cancer treatment in the special ward for patients with cancer and hematologic diseases, and in a stem cell transplantation ward.
The Hematology & Oncology Department has developed a system for collaboration with the surgery, gastroenterology, pulmonology, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and radiation oncology departments, along with the cancer centers such as Stomach cancer center, Colon cancer center, Lung cancer center, and breast cancer center, to support the treatment and recovery of patients.

Infectious Diseases

The Infectious Diseases Department diagnoses and treat infectious diseases within the body and provides suitable treatment by investigating the cause of various pyrexic diseases.
The Infectious Diseases Department mainly treats opportunistic infections, Riclieltsia tsuisugamushi disease and epidemic hemorrhagic fever, such as unexplained fever, digestive system infection, cardiovascular infection, urogenital infection, and AIDS. In addition, the medical team in the infectious disease department provides professional medical service through their perfect teamwork.

Allergy & Clinical Immunology

The Allergy & Clinical Immunology Department specializes in treating and researching diseases caused by hypersensitive immune response due to dust, mites, pollen, fungi, animal hair, food, drugs and other external substances.
Allergic reactions can affect any part of the body, and include respiratory allergic diseases such as respiratory asthma, allergic rhinitis, and chronic cough, as well as skin allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, rash, angioedema and anaphylaxis, eosinophilia, food, drug, and apisination, as well as exercise-related allergies, which can involve multiple symptoms.

Rheumatology

The Rheumatology Department specializes in treating and diagnosing diverse rheumatic diseases. The Rheumatology Department collaborates closely with orthopedics and rehabilitation medicine to improve its diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases and increase the accuracy of diagnosis by having rheumatic specialists perform ultrasonic examination on the joints themself.

Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine

The Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine Department is responsible for the overall treatment of young patients, from newborn babies to adolescents 15 years of age.

The Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine Department uses its top-class equipment and the medical knowledge of its staff to provide the best treatment possible, and operates pediatric sickbeds, a newborn intensive care unit, newborn room, and pediatric emergency room. In addition, the department includes a special pediatric treatment center with special pediatric examination rooms, including a pediatric heart ultrasonic room, an inherited metabolic disorder examination room, a developmental psychology examination room operated by professionals in Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, as well as a neurology & brainwave examination room, allergy examination room, and bone marrow transplant & aseptic ward, which are managed together with the Internal Medicine Department.

Neurology

The Neurology Department researches the brain, peripheral nerves, and muscles, and specializes in treating every disease related with this area.
The Neurology Department mainly deals with strokes, cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, headaches, dizziness, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, dyskinetic movement disease, and muscle & peripheral neurological disorder. If a patient has symptoms such as numbness or shaking of the hands and feet, clouded consciousness, facial paralysis, seizure convulsion, fainting, neuralgia, waist-down paralysis, sensory disorder or walking disorder, they are sent to the neurology department.
The Neurology Department is carrying out wide-ranging research on interneuronal cells, occurrence of nervous system, gene treatment, and the development of new pharmaceuticals for the complete recovery of neurologic diseases. It is dedicated to providing speedy diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients, and runs stroke-focused treatment rooms.

Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences

The Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Department systematically and professionally treats various psychiatric diseases, including: Hospitalization and outpatient treatment of schizophrenia, depression, bi-polar disorder, somatization disorder , personality disorder, anxiety disorder, and stress disorder, Brain diseases such as organic mental disorder, substance abuse, Alzheimer’s disease, Pediatric & Adolescent psychiatry, Obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, developmental disorder special clinic, Consultation treatment of patients from other departments. Also, the department operates a ‘Day hospital’ for outpatients that runs rehabilitation programs and treats diseases at the same time. It helps patients with mental illnesses successfully return to society.
The medical teams in the Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Department are doing their utmost to help patients readapt to society, and often personally visit patients who cannot come to the hospital in order to treat and rehabilitate them. The medical team also acts as the representative and advisory committee of the Mental Health Center operated by the regional community and the city.

Dermatology

Trauma and Acute Care Surgery

The Trauma and Acute Care Surgery is responsible for the treatment of major trauma patients, and trains specialists in trauma. Major trauma patients are patients with serious complications such as haemorrhagic shock or multiple organ failure caused by damage to the body in a large area or damage to the main organs due to penetration or blunt trauma.
The Trauma and Acute Care Surgery of Ajou University Hospital has the largest emergency medical center, intensive treatment room, and a fast helicopter transportation system. It also has the most experience in treating major trauma patients.
Professor Gook-Jong Lee, a doctor that is well-known as a Korean pioneer in the field of major trauma and who is also known for treating captain Hae-Gyun Seok, has built an excellent trauma treatment system by introducing the advanced trauma treatment systems of the US and UK to Korea. The Trauma and Acute Care Surgery is playing a leading role in the development of trauma surgery in Korea, and in improving trauma patient survival rates.

Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery

Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery is responsible not only for heart, lung and esophagus surgery but also for vascular surgeries such as aortic disease, peripheral vascular disease, and varix.

Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department specializes in the research and treatment of eye related diseases.
Ophthalmology is subdivided into various smaller fields, and specialized treatments are provided in fields such as retina•vitreous humor, strabismus•pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplasty, glaucoma, corneal transplant and keratorefractive surgery, extraocular parts and contact lens as well as cataract. The department is contributing to effective treatment by operating a Retina clinic, Myopia correction clinic, and an Artificial eye clinic.
The Ophthalmology Department is working to provide speedy diagnosis and treatment by efficiently performing the ophthalmologic examinations that are essential for the treatment of ocular diseases such as cataract and retina diseases, and is treating amblyopia in its ophthalmic examination room, where specialists are always available.

Otolaryngology

Otolaryngology is a field that treats ears, nose and throat. Specialized treatment is performed by subdividing it into three fields.
Our Otolaryngology Department is renowned domestically for its patient treatment. Our specialists have published many research papers domestically and internationally in the field of otitis media cholesteatomatica, pediatric deafness, acoustic tumor, sinus surgery, and head and neck tumor.

Urology

The Urology Department is specialized in treating diseases that occur in the kidney, urethra, bladder, and prostate gland, which are part of the urinary system in both men and women.
The Urology Department consists of specialists in pediatric urologic diseases, urologic tumor, urinary stone, male infertility, sexual dysfunction, and dysuresia, and they are well-known for their teamwork.
An extracorporeal shockwave liythoripsy room is located at the outpatient area of the Urology Department, increasing the efficiency of urinary stone treatment. Treatment of urologic disease and prostate gland disease is enhanced through cystolitholapaxy and TURP. In addition, the department operates a urinary incontinence clinic and an enuresis clinic.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

The Rehabilitation Medicine Department specializes in treating temporary or permanent disabilities caused by disasters such as traffic accidents or industrial accidents, diseases, and the after effects of adult diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.
The purpose of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department is to help patients to live independent and social lives by maximizing their remaining abilities and minimizing the disability through a rehabilitation treatment program, even if the patient has an irrecoverable permanent disability.
In the Rehabilitation Medicine Department, the doctor providing the rehabilitation treatment does not make decisions alone, but works with a rehabilitation treatment team of doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, language therapists, clinical psychologists, nutritionists, and social workers to provide optimal treatment in order to meet the patient’s needs.

Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine

Anesthesiology & Pain Management is a field responsible for anesthesia during surgery, pain treatment and intensive care. Anesthetic during surgery can be subdivided into cranial anesthesia, cardiopulmonary anesthesia, organ transplant anesthesia, intravenous anesthesia, and pediatric anesthesia.
The Anesthesiology & Pain Management Department injects an amount of anesthetics suitable for the patient during surgery, manages the overall condition of the patient before, during and after the surgery, provides inhalation therapy or attaches a respirator to patients that have difficulty in breathing, and finally manages patients with serious illnesses.
The Anesthesiology & Pain Management Department of Ajou University Hospital provides anesthesia to patients safely and comfortably by using anesthetic equipment that has the latest detection devices. The role of the department is expanding beyond the operating room into pain treatment and intensive treatment.

Radiology

The Radiology Department is one of the important supporting departments for the examinations and treatments performed by all clinics within the hospital.
The Radiology Department diagnoses patients from other departments with simple radiography, normally called X-ray, and the latest angiography and interventional procedures, and enables rapid diagnosis and treatment by transferring the images to related departments.
The Radiology Department of Ajou University Hospital, which has the largest facility (4000 m²) in Korea, works innovatively and stably to perform speedy and accurate examination and deciphering using the latest imaging equipment such as CR, DR, CT, MDCT, MRI, angiography and interventional procedure scanner, digital scanner, and ultrasonic color doppler scanner based on our fast medical image information delivery system.
In addition, the Radiology Department is subdivided into various fields of specialization, such as nerves and interventional neuoradiology, pediatry, thorax, abdomen, urinogenital organs, vascular and nonvascular intervention, musculoskeletal system, breast, and heart. The department has an excellent faculty.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation Oncology is a field that treats cancer using radiation, and provides optimum radiotherapy for various cancers, including breast cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and digestive organ cancer.
The Radiation Oncology department has a computer system for radiotherapy and a specialized simulator. The department is doing its utmost to provide radiotherapy that is personalized to each individual with the latest radiation treatment equipment.
The effects of cancer treatment are maximized through the active application of radiotherapy and oncothermia, which was recently introduced.

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine supports clinical diagnoses from the other departments through imaging and laboratory examination. The department also treats various cancers as well as benign diseases using radioactive isotopes.
Nuclear medicine imaging is a process of imaging functional changes in the body; in other words, biological or biochemical changes. The advantage of this method is that compared to anatomical imaging, it makes relatively early treatment possible. PET CT, which was introduced recently, is useful for detecting the early presence, spread and recurrence of various cancers, and also for the evaluation of cerebropathy and coronary artery diseases. The blood testing performed by the Nuclear Medicine department, which examines hepatitis, tumors, various hormones such as thyroid hormones, and allergies, is a high-accuracy examination method that has been in use for a long time in clinical treatment.
The Nuclear Medicine department performs radioactive isotope treatment as an auxiliary treatment in surgeries related to thyroid cancer, brain tumor and coronary artery diseases. There are also treatment wards for patients with thyroid cancer who are under high-dose radioactive isotope treatment. The patient satisfaction and treatment effect is very high as well, because the specialists in nuclear medicine treat patients personally.

Laboratory Medicine

The Laboratory Medicine department performs the speedy and accurate diagnoses and examinations required for the decision of prognosis by using various specimens from the patient. The department performs various examinations on blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, body fluid, microorganisms and cancer cells. The blood bank is responsible for supplying blood to departments within the hospital that require blood transfusions, and performs other related tests and blood donations.
The Laboratory Medicine department was the first university hospital department to receive accreditation with an excellent grade from College of American Pathologists (CAP), a Review Institution of the US Society of Pathology. The department is domestically and internationally acknowledged for its outstanding lab, and has obtained an outstanding examination lab accreditation from Society of Pathology and an accreditation from Korean Association Quality Assurance for Clinical Laboratory.
The automation of the advanced laboratory was realized in March 2006, providing an accurate, safe lab environment that greatly assists in the prompt treatment of patients.

Pathology

Pathology mainly deals with the cause, pathogenesis, morphologic change, and functional change of diseases.
The Pathology Department assists in deciding the treatment direction of otolaryngology by providing fast and accurate pathological diagnosis using specimens obtained from biopsy, operated tissue, exfoliation and aspiration, and autopsy of a patient.
Hematoxylin & Eosin staining is done for diagnosis, and not only special staining, histochemistry staining, immunohistologic staining, tissue culture, and rapid cryostatic sectioning, but more recently molecular biological method (in situ hybridization), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gene rearrangement are also being performed.

Emergency Medical Center

Emergency Medicine is the emergency treatment of acute diseases or physical disorders caused by injuries.
The Emergency Medical Center has been designated as the emergency medical center for the Southern Gyeonggi region and manages the various emergency situations and disasters occurring in the regional community. The Emergency Medical Center is the largest in the country, with an area of about 4400 m², a basement floor, and five floors above ground. Specialists in emergency medicine are in the building 24/7 and are thoroughly prepared to handle medical emergencies such as wounds, cerebrovascular, and cardiovascular diseases.

Occupational & Environmental Medicine involves research, treatment and preventive activity related to health disorders of industrial workers and members of the community caused by various harmful factors, applying a high level of knowledge and technique in the field of occupational and environmental diseases while nurturing specialists.
The Occupational & Environmental Medicine Department is responsible for the safety evaluation and management of workplaces that use harmful substances such as solvents, heavy metals, dusts and noise. The department performs outpatient treatment for occupational disease and diseases caused by defoliants.
The Occupational & Environmental Medicine Department has greatly contributed to the prevention of occupational diseases by supporting environmental management in workplaces. The department is very interested in prevention and diagnosis of occupational musculoskeletal diseases and diseases caused by work stress, which are receiving attention as new occupational diseases.

Family Practice & Community Health

The Family Practice & Community Health Department is responsible for primary treatment. Primary treatment means continuous, comprehensive medical care that takes responsibility for the patient from hospital visit and hospitalization to leaving hospital, sick or not.
The medical team at the Family Practice & Community Health Department is working hard to provide the best primary treatment, and performs comprehensive treatment of menopause, aging management, obesity, chronic fatigue, family consultation, and stress management. Also, the Health Promotion Center provides consultation on the results of comprehensive examinations, and contributes greatly to health promotion and disease prevention.
In addition, the Family Practice & Community Health department runs an obesity clinic and a non-smoking clinic to provide more specialized treatments.
